Fans were curious about Beyoncé's next move after she dropped Renaissance and disclosed that it was the first of a "three-act project." And it's almost here, Cowboy Carter.
The cover featured the singer astride a space-age horse, and Renaissance was influenced by dance and house. For album two, the rest will change, but the horse will remain. Cowboy Carter leans more towards Americana and country music, and judging from the success of her singles "Texas Hold 'Em" and "16 Carriages," it appears that she is a master of the genre. Is that a country album then?
Sort of. The mother of three stated in a statement on March 19 that "This ain't a country album," possibly in an attempt to deflect criticism from fans of the genre or simply to avoid being constrained by arbitrary genre standards. This album is titled "Beyoncé." I'm happy to present act two of COWBOY CARTER to you all.
Actually, the album was inspired by a particular Beyoncé moment that also has to do with country music. "It took more than five years to create this album. It started because of an incident I went through years ago in which I was clearly not made to feel welcome. However, as a result of that encounter, I researched our extensive musical archive and took a closer look at the history of country music," she stated in the statement. It is generally agreed upon that she is speaking of the conflicting reactions she encountered following her performance of "Daddy Lessons" at the 2016 Country Music Awards with the contentious band The Chicks. The song was also disqualified from consideration by the Grammy Awards' country committee.She might be alluding to her experience of being shunned by the rural community as a whole, given that year.
With "Texas Hold 'Em" at the top of the country charts, it appears that the community may be a little more accepting now. "I feel honoured to be the first Black woman with the number one single on the Hot Country Songs chart," Beyoncé wrote in a blog post. Without the overwhelming support from each and every one of you, that would never have happened. I hope that in a few years, it will be moot to discuss an artist's race in relation to music genre releases.
"When I first started in this genre, I was met with criticism, which pushed me to overcome the constraints placed upon me. Act II is the outcome of my self-challenge, she continued, taking my time to bend and combine genres to produce this body of work.
